Visual Perceptual Assessment

  • The TVPS-4 assesses the seven areas of visual skills.

It includes a series of black and white images shown to the child by the therapist. The child is then able to choose from different options to select their answer. They can either do this verbally or by pointing. This can make it an easier assessment for those with impairments in motor, speech, neurological, or cognitive functions.

  • The TVPS can be completed at home, in a clinic or within the school setting., It takes around 25 minutes to complete. It can be used with ages 5 to 21.

  • Visual perceptual assessments help us to understand how a child or young person perceives the world around them. Understanding this information helps parents, carers and education staff to better support a child.

You may observe the following if your child has visual perceptual difficulties:

    1. Difficulty finding objects in a busy room or cluttered bag.

    2. Difficulties with handwriting skills such as reversing letters, struggling to organise their work on the page or copying work down from the board.

    3. Challenges completing activities such as puzzles, construction tasks or following simple visual instructions.
