Auditory Sense - Understanding what we hear

Over-responsive

Children who are over-responsive to sound struggle with loud noises and unexpected noises. It can be difficult to filter out background noise and competing noise. This can mean they cover their ears with loud sounds, get distracted by noise, may tune out or seem to ignore you, be slow to follow instructions, struggle with group work, avoid noisy places and ask people to be quiet frequently.

Under-responsive

Children who under-react to sound often do not register sounds in the environment. They may appear to not have heard what you have said, make their own noises to keep focused on tasks or have difficulty remembering instructions.
