Fine Motor Skills

  • What are fine motor skills?

These are the small movements we make with our hands and fingers to complete a task. These could be activities such as handwriting, colouring, using scissors, doing up buttons, fastening nuts and bolts, opening packets or a construction task such as Lego.

  • Fine motor strength

This is the ability to have enough strength in our hands to complete a daily task such as unscrewing a bottle, being able to hold a pencil or pen to write or draw or being able to fasten a button.

  • Fine motor precision

This is the ability to use the muscles in the hands in a coordinated and accurate way. This could include activities such as being able to isolate fingers to type, being able to play a musical instrument such as the piano or being able to manage fastenings such as shoelaces or nuts and bolts.
