Life Skills Assessment

  • Adaptive Behavior Assessment System, Third Edition (ABAS-3) gives a complete picture of adaptive skills across the lifespan. It is particularly useful for evaluating those with developmental delays, autistic spectrum condition, intellectual disabilities, learning disabilities, neuropsychological disorders, and sensory or physical impairments.

The assessment covers the following areas: communication, community use, functional academics, school/home living, health and safety, leisure, self-care, self-direction, social, and workplace skills.

It includes real-life skills such as grooming, getting dressed, avoiding danger, safe food handling, following school rules, managing money, cleaning, and making friends.

  • The assessment is a simple form in which you rate the level of independence within a number of skills. There is a form for teachers to complete, a form for parents and an adolescent/adult form for individuals with needs to complete themselves.

  • This assessment may highlight any difficulties your child has with life skills. This can be useful for setting goals or informing a report for EHCP.

It can also give you a better understanding of what your child should be achieving at their age in order to identify strengths as well as weaknesses.
