Gross and Fine Motor Skills Assessment

Bruininks-Oseretsky Test of Motor Proficiency (BOT-2)
The assessment is a recognised standardised assessment used all over the world by multiple health professionals.
This assessment looks at gross and fine motor skills across the following areas:
Fine Motor Precision: Through completion of tasks including drawing, paper folding and cutting with scissors
Fine Motor Integration: Copying geometric shapes of increasing complexity as accurately as possible
Manual Dexterity Activities e.g. reaching, grasping and using two hands together to transfer pennies, place pegs into a pegboard , string beads and sort cards
Bilateral Coordination: Using two sides of the body together to do jumping jacks, finger pivots and tapping feet and fingers with opposite sides of the body
Balance: Tasks are both stationary and moving and are completed with eyes open and closed. This assesses trunk stability, static and dynamic postural control, and use of visual cues
Running Speed and Agility: Four activities including a shuttle run, hopping on one and both feet and stepping over a balance beam
Upper-Limb Coordination: Tasks include catching, throwing, and dribbling a tennis ball, with one or both hands together.
Strength: Assesses trunk and upper and lower extremity strength through activities such as press ups, a wall sit and sit ups.

The BOT-2 is an assessment that can take place in clinic, at home or in school. It is completed by a BOT-2 trained Occupational Therapist.

You child may need this assessment if the following is observed:
Appears clumsy
Appears uncoordinated
Has difficulty completing smooth movements
Has frequent falls/trips
Has difficulties manipulating small items
Has difficulties writing or using scissors
Has difficulty running, jumping, hoping or engaging in sports or P.E.
Seems to have poor muscle strength e.g. floppy or leans on surfaces
Has difficulty with some self care tasks e.g. fastenings for dressing
